"How are baby chicks born?"

My children asked, "How are baby chicks born?".  Since we homeschool, I thought lets have a science project....

  • We read Chickens for Dummies book.
  • We ordered fertilized silkie chicken eggs on ebay.
  • Made a homemade incubator. We used our country (redneck) engineering skills to use things around the house.

  • We turned the eggs 3 times a day for 18 days.

  • On day 8 we candled the eggs to see heartbeats and movement. Like an egg ultrasound.  Four of the eggs were not fertile.

  • On day 22  we heard peeping & movement coming from the eggs.

  • On day 23 :-)  We had the hatching of Steve McNugget. Yes, we all cried in happiness.

My mother, grandmother, grandaddy, aunt and uncle (everybody and their momma) all came too see the new family additions  <: Steve, Chicken Little, Leslie, and Lucky.

We put them in a kiddie pool, in the spare room with heat lamps for a month.

I Love them <3  but I was so happy to put them outside in their new home (chicken tractor).

                                                       Gracee the chicken guard dog.

We love our new pet chickens. The girl's questions were answered about baby chickens then out came..... "Momma how are baby frogs born?"  I guess we need a pet frog! :)

  1. Hey, Jamie!
Colin's teacher hatched eggs in their classroom last year. It was soooo cool! Even us teachers had to check it out each day. Good tp "see" you.
